Statement on Potentially Offensive Historical Sources
Documenting the resilience and cultural creativity of Black musicians in contexts of enslavement, racism, and prejudice often involves gathering information from historical sources that use offensive imagery and language. The Darkofa.net team refuses to use such language in cataloguing those materials. However, we do not edit primary sources containing such language, which represent the actions and opinions of their creators. Following contemporary decolonial archival practices, the Darkofa.net team believe these sources play a vital role in holding those creators accountable and helping us learn from the past.
